I wondered who said

miles and miles

and miles

of dusty, parched earth

and wheels on asphalt

would bring clairty

That the stretch of forever in your sight

would bring sun

through the fogged screen of your mind

and that you’d come out

feeling less alone

and more yourself on the other side.

Street lines, road signs, the traffic

occupied time and divulged energy

spent and was spent continuously

All the God’s are dead

they sit frozen in time

on our dashboards and in our temples

on ropes holding them tightly to our chests.

We pray like they can hear us

throwing petitions at the sky

like we are hoping for answers in the rain

when the only water here

are the tears down our face

while the old gods speak in silence

the modern gods dance

in a flash of light and noise

and disappear when the necromancy ends

Not really happy with this piece but I am leaving it as is because it just spilled out of me in a random burst of words.

I told him

“when you’re tired of running

you know my address,

come and visit for a while.

You can stay with me and take a break.”

We can get to know each other

over spaghetti, bad jokes and reality televison

and I won’t ask you to stay when you leave

I know you wouldn’t anyway.

But when your knees go out

too fragile to move ahead

I won’t let your nightmares catch up with you

When your fears eat me whole

and you drift away without a kiss

or a thank you

it’ll be okay, this wasn’t for you anyway

fingers tremble like my legs under the weight of a heavy heart

mine was never made to say goodbyes

yet here I stand

kissing the envelope in hand

to leave at the foot of your bed.

We both know you won’t come back

but I’ll wait for your letter explaining

how this isn’t wrong

and in the long run

I’ll see it was the right move all along

the baby in my belly

won’t know you from Adam

but he’ll always have a letter and a picture

of a stranger

as a permanent bedroom fixture

and when we are both older

and wise

we’ll see it was the right move the whole time

the wishes he’ll make to have a father

by Christmas Day

and when return to sender

is all i’m greeted with
